Description

The FD Mazda RX-7 is one of my favorite Japanese sports cars from the 1990s, as it touts gorgeous styling, nimble handling, and a unique twin-turbocharged rotary engine. This particular FD is a Japanese-market Type R model that features a 5-speed manual transmission and some nice equipment – including 16-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, and a Nardi steering wheel. This RX-7 also comes with a U.S. title, so the difficult task of importing it has already been completed.

1999 Mazda RX-7 Type R, finished in Highlight Silver Metallic with a black interior.

  • This Mazda is a Japanese-spec, right-hand drive coupe equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission; it’s titled and located in Michigan. The odometer reads in metric units and indicates approximately 97,200 kilometers or roughly 60,400 miles.
  • A partial list of notable equipment reported by the seller includes 16-inch aluminum wheels, pop-up headlights, a Nardi steering wheel, an adjustable rear spoiler, AutoExe windshield wipers, and air conditioning.
  • Notable modifications reported by the seller include a Knight Sports exhaust, a Pioneer Carrozzeria head unit, and Kenwood tweeter speakers.
  • The seller reports that this RX-7’s rotary engine was extensively rebuilt in August 2025 by Kevin Landers at Rotary Resurrection; a full list of parts and services included in the rebuild is detailed below, and break-in and maintenance instructions are included in the sale.
  • Launched in Japan by the short-lived ɛ̃fini brand in 1991, Mazda’s third-generation RX-7 (called “FD” internally) was praised by enthusiasts and journalists as a significant improvement over its predecessor. Its more fluid lines aligned it with the design trends of the 1990s, and the Wankel rotary gave it Porsche-like performance without the price tag. The FD saw numerous updates throughout its lifespan, and final-version Series 8 models such as this one received updates such as facelifted bumpers, a 4-level adjustable rear spoiler, and increased output from its sequential twin-turbocharged rotary engine.
  • Power comes from a 13B-REW 1.3-liter sequential twin-turbocharged twin-rotor rotary engine, rated at about 276 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. Output is directed to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission.
